7th WAPOR Latin American Congress “New Forms of Political Participation and Quality of Democracy in Latin America”

12 – 14 October 2016 – Monterrey, Mexico Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León   Call for papers  The World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) welcomes submissions for the 7th Latin American congress to be held on 12-14 October 2016 in Monterrey, Mexico. All activities and presentations will take place at the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. All of those professionals and researchers linked to the study of public opinion within different areas, including political science, communication, psychology, sociology, or economy, are invited. Furthermore, the invitation is also open to researchers in the region and other areas of the world. The conference hopes to receive contributions about the new forms of political participation that are opening up in Latin American countries (through social media, direct participation, citizens’ observatories etc.) and their effect on citizens’ democratic engagement, as well as the quality of democracy in Latin American countries. However, the conference is also open to contributions on other issues related to public opinion, such as the relationship between communication and citizens’ behavior, the influence of the media on the construction of the public agenda or the study of citizens’ political attitudes. Consequently, researchers are invited to contribute with original presentations that focus on these issues as well as studies on classic issues of public opinion, including:   ·       Political participation ·       Polarization ·       Civic culture ·       Theory of public opinion ·       Trust and social capital ·       Political processes and public opinion ·       The spiral of silence ·       The media ·       Participation and new media ·       Media effects ·       Audience fragmentation ·       Comparative research on public opinion in Latin America ·       Surveys and experimental methodologies ·       Qualitative methodologies (focus group, in-depth interviews, case studies, panel studies, etc) ·       Emerging research with new technologies ·       Electoral studies ·       Design of survey questions, samples, response and non-response rates ·       Statistical wealth and reliability ·       Transparency and communication of research data   Types of proposal Two types of proposal can be presented: 1. Panels: those researchers interested in doing so can propose panels. The proposals must include a general description of the topic (200 words maximum), name and contact information of the participants, titles of the articles that will be presented and a 200-word summary of each paper. Furthermore, the researchers should indicate who will act as the panel’s coordinator. A minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 presentations per panel will be permitted. Maximum length of the proposal: 1200 words 2. Presentations: Authors should present original research with a summary that includes the following elements: title and general description of the paper. This description should include: approach to the topic, hypothesis or research questions, methodology, and results. In a separate document the author should send the title of the research and his or her contact information. Maximum length: 300 words.
