General Security Context
Mexico is classified by several foreign ministries as a country where increased caution is advised, primarily due to organized crime and regionally concentrated violence. These risks are not uniform across the country. Incidents reported in early 2026, including cartel-related violence, were concentrated in specific states such as Jalisco and Michoacán, which are located approximately 400–600 kilometers west of Mexico City. These regions are geographically and administratively distinct from the capital, and the reported violence did not affect Mexico City or its metropolitan area. As the political and economic center of the country, Mexico City is generally considered comparatively stable within the national context.
Urban Safety Conditions
As a large metropolitan area, Mexico City presents risks typical of major global cities rather than exceptional insecurity. Violent crime exists but is rarely directed at foreign visitors. The primary concern is petty crime, particularly pickpocketing and theft in crowded public spaces or on public transport. Safety conditions vary by neighborhood, with central districts and business areas benefiting from higher levels of security and surveillance.
Transport and Mobility
Transport-related precautions are particularly relevant in the urban context. The use of registered or app-based transport services, such as Uber or hotel-arranged taxis, is recommended, while hailing taxis on the street should be avoided due to risks of fraud. As in other large cities, limiting movement at night outside well-frequented areas is advisable.
Health and Infrastructure
With regard to health considerations, tap water in Mexico City is not safe to drink, and bottled or properly filtered water should be used. For short-term stays, this risk is easily manageable and standard for international travel in the region. Food safety standards in central urban areas are generally reliable, particularly in established restaurants frequented by international visitors. In case of minor health issues, pharmacies are widely available, and basic medical services can be accessed if needed, although no specific health risks are associated with short-term conference travel beyond standard urban precautions.
